ACA Webinar - Broadening Horizons through Collaborative Online International Learning

Broadening Horizons through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Dr. Danielle Walters, Strategic Manager for Global Affairs, University of Tennessee

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), also known as Virtual Exchange, is a high-impact practice that connects classrooms across borders through shared, credit-bearing projects. By integrating international collaboration directly into courses, COIL expands access to global learning opportunities for students—especially those in rural communities who may not otherwise have the chance to travel abroad.

In this session, Dr. Walters will introduce the COIL model, highlight its benefits for faculty and institutions, and share opportunities for developing a collaborative structure within the Appalachian College Association. Drawing from her own journey as a King University graduate, former Director of International Programs at Lincoln Memorial University, and current leader of UT’s COIL initiative, Dr. Walters will outline a vision for how ACA institutions might partner together to build faculty capacity, design innovative curricula, and create transformative learning experiences for students.

Join us to learn more about COIL, explore how it aligns with ACA’s mission, and share your feedback on the potential for developing a consortial model within our region.
