Students Without a Safety Net: Strategies for Supporting Students At-Risk of Failing or Dropping out of College
Amber Hughes, Associate Professor & Fieldwork Coordinator for Counselor Education and Supervision, Lindsey Wilson University
Career planning requires a certain level of risk for college students as they make academic decisions based on economic factors that are constantly changing. In the current world of work, jobs are increasingly precarious - unstable and temporary - increasing risks associated with career decisions. In this session, the discussion facilitator will share evidence-based strategies to support these students’ educational and career development. Participants will identify key risk factors affecting students, including the distinct career challenges experienced by at-risk Appalachian students. The session will also explore practical strategies and existing supports, within and beyond the classroom, to help students navigate and mitigate these challenges. The recommended audience is faculty and staff who teach and mentor our students.
